The Camino Portugues from Lisbon marks the beginning of the Camino to Santiago de Compostela. This first section begins in the picturesque and lively capital of Portugal, Lisbon, where you will enjoy a walk through historic squares such as Plaza do Comercio, in front of the Tagus River, with great views from the multiple viewpoints scattered around the city, or you can visit wonders such as the Torre do Belem or the Monastery dos Jeronimos.
Your Camino will run parallel to the Tagus River, crossing populations of ancient bullfighting tradition between vineyard lands and fruit crops. You will pass through the small town of Azambuja, where the region's wine is an important part of its culture. Finally you will reach the beautiful town of Santarem, a charming and riverside town, where you will live the magic of its ancient and narrow streets, and the splendor of its Churches or the Cathedral.
Arrival to the wonderful city of Lisbon. Enjoy its streets and beautiful squares like the Plaza do Comercio. Walk through its charming old town and take a walk in the typical tram that runs through much of the city. Lisbon is full of viewpoints with great views. It is also highly recommended a walk through Belem, near the city, where you can visit the Jeronimos Monastery and the Belem Tower, both monuments declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
Your Camino Portugues will depart from the beautiful Lisbon Cathedral. You will continue along the Tagus River, crossing the great Park of Nations for a section that also follows the pilgrimage route to the spiritual center of Fatima. Your path continues until you reach Santa Iria de Azoia, where you will spend tonight.
In this second stage your journey will continue in parallel to the Tagus River (Tejo in Portuguese) through flat land until you reach Vila Franca de Xira, a town with huge bullfighting tradition, the end of today's stage.
Today's stage will be very similar to the previous one, both in terms of distance and difficulty. The Tagus River will continue nearby to guide your way to Azambuja, where your journey ends today. Azambuja is popular for bull enclosures and for the great wine culture of the region.
After spending the night in Azambuja, your Camino continues between vineyard lands and fields until reaching the last part of the stage, where a small climb will lead you to Santarem, your goal today. Santarem is a beautiful city next to the Tagus River, where you can take a walk through its narrow streets and contemplate a splendid panorama from the viewpoint located in Porta do Sol Garden. Some points of interest are the Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady of the Conception.
After spending the night in Santarem, your path will continue near the Tagus River between vineyard lands and crops. Along this route you can see horses and bulls, since it is a region where the breeding of these animals abounds. Finally you will reach Golega, where you will stay tonight.
After having a good breakfast, we recommend a visit to Quinta da Cardiga, in Golega. Today's stage will be quite varied, you will visit beautiful rural places and you will pass through small towns going up and down your path until you reach the beautiful town of Tomar, the end of today's stage. Tomar is the historic city of the Templars, where you can not miss the Templar Castle and the Convent of Christ..
Your Camino Portugues will continue along old roads and bridges of medieval times such as the historic Peniche Bridge, crossing beautiful groves and crops, with continuous ascents and descents until reaching Alvaiazere.
After spending the night in Alvaiazere, your path continues with a small ascent and a progressive descent until you reach Ansiao, a town known for the historic monumental complex of Santiago da Guarda..
Today's stage will take you along a beautiful path of continuous turns until you reach Rabaçal. Then you will continue your journey through pine and eucalyptus forests passing through Conimbriga. Both Rabaçal and Conimbriga are ancient Roman towns that are worth visiting. Finally, you will walk a short stretch until you reach Nova Condeixa, the end of today's stage.
After spending the night in Condeixa a Nova, your Camino Portugues presents you with a short stage until you reach the beautiful and romantic city of Coimbra. It will be a beautiful tour through lovely forests and vineyards. Coimbra is a beautiful city, full of history and cultural heritage. It is advisable to visit its Gothic Cathedral and the University, one of the oldest in Europe. The Monastery of Santa Cruz or that of Santa Clara-a-Velha are also among the most prominent places of interest. But above all, do not forget to take a walk through the medieval historical center.
After spending the night in the wonderful city of Coimbra, your Camino starts with a climb when you leave the city and until you reach Cioga do Monte. Then, your stage follows a path of little difficulty with beautiful stretches that cross pine and eucalyptus groves. Finally, you will reach the town of Mealhada, where you will stay tonight.
Today's stage continues parallel to the Certima River, passing through Avelas do Caminho, a town with a strong connection to the Camino de Santiago as the name implies. You will end up in Agueda, a pleasant city next to the Certima river and where nearby is A Pateira de Fermentelos, a beautiful lake of natural water.
You will wake up in Agueda, where we recommend that before continuing with your path you visit one of its picturesque churches. Today a short and easy stage awaits you that will end with a small ascent towards the end of your Way, once you have crossed the Marnel River, and that will take you to the beautiful and historic village of Albergaria A Velha.
Your Camino Portugues continues with a stage of little difficulty, along the medieval road that will allow you to visit the beautiful city of Oliveira de Azemeis, where the beautiful matrix Church of Sao Miguel is a must. Then, your journey will continue through small hills until you reach Sao Joao da Madeira, your goal today.
Your Camino de Santiago continues through interesting towns like Arrifana or Crucijães. In Arrifana, you can find Roman vestiges and its outstanding Iglesia Azul (blue church). In Crucijães we recommend that you visit the Monastery. You will continue your journey to Grijo, the end of this stage.
Then, your Camino begins the stage that will end in the beautiful city of Porto, with its wonderful old town declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The iconic Luis I Bridge over the Douro River stands out, as well as the colorful houses and buildings on the banks of the river where the historic boats float. In Porto, you will rest and enjoy a splendid city.
You will leave the city of Porto leaving the urban areas to start crossing more rural areas from Maia, where you can visit the Monastery do Divino Salvador de Moreira. Your Camino passes through Vilarinho and you will finally reach the town of Fajozes, where you will rest tonight.
Your journey will continue through rural areas, going through different groves until you reach Arcos, the end of today's stage.
After spending the night in Arcos, you face a beautiful stage with small hills that will allow you to visit picturesque villages until you reach the beautiful city of Barcelos, entering through its emblematic medieval bridge. Barcelos treasures numerous legends and is the city of the popular and iconic Portuguese rooster. We recommend that you visit the old town.
You will wake up in Barcelos to continue with your Camino through typical rural areas of Portugal and through green places as you approach Galicia. You will finish the stage in the historic Portuguese village of Ponte de Lima, where you will stay tonight.
After having a good breakfast, your Camino continues from the shore of the Lima river, taking a climb to the Alto da Portela Grande de Labruja, the most complicated part of today's stage. Your path continues parallel to the river until you reach Rubiaes, the end of the stage.
You will continue with your Camino Portugues through picturesque hills until you reach the beautiful town of Valença do Minho, where its Fortress stands out. From Valença do Minho, you will finally enter Galicia crossing the Miño river by the International Bridge that will take you to Tui.Tui is a charming medieval town. We recommend a walk through its beautiful streets and the Plaza de San Fernando. We also recommend visiting the Cathedral of Santa Maria./p>
After having crossed the famous International Bridge over the Miño River, designed by Gustave Eiffel himself, you will begin your journey from the old port of Tui. Your path will continue to the beautiful village of Valença do Minho, towards O Porriño, where you will rest tonight.
Today's stage will be slightly more difficult than the previous one but it will be compensated with beautiful views of the Atlantic. You will continue through the valley of Louro, ascending to the hill where you will find the Chapel of Santiaguiño. Your path continues with a spectacular panoramic view through the town of Redondela. Then, you will continue near the Ría de Vigo until you reach Arcade, your goal today.
Short stages option, Easy Camino: If you choose this itinerary option you can divide this stage into two stages with less route , with a first stage of 15 Km to the village of Redondela , where you will spend the night, and a second stage of 9 Km until you reach Arcade.
After spending the night in Arcade, you have a short but very pleasant stage ahead of you. You will cross the Verdugo river through the Romanesque Sampaio Bridge and continue along a cobbled road with great views of the Bay of Vigo until you reach the beautiful city of Pontevedra. Pontevedra is the most attractive city of this itinerary, with a charming old town. We recommend taking a walk through its picturesque squares and narrow streets of the old town.
You will wake up in Pontevedra to continue with your Camino de Santiago towards the spa town of Caldas de Reis. Your journey will begin among beautiful groves until you reach Ponte Cabras. You will continue through typical rural towns of Galicia until you reach Caldas de Reis, the end of today's stage.
Short stages option, Easy Camino: If you choose this itinerary option you can divide this stage into two stages with less route , with a first stage of 9 Km until the village of San Amaro , where you will spend the night, and a second stage of 12 Km until you reach Caldas de Reis.
Your Camino continues through beautiful forests visiting small villages and crossing streams until you reach the town of Padron, famous for its peppers and for being the land of renowned writers such as Camilo Jose Cela.
Short stages option, Easy Camino: If you choose this itinerary option you can divide this stage into two stages with less route , with a first stage of 9 Km until the village of As Cernadas , where you will spend the night, and a second stage of 10 Km until you reach Padron.
After resting and having a good breakfast in Padron, you are in the last stage of your Camino Portugues. It will be a somewhat longer journey and with a progressive ascent until reaching the Plaza del Obradoiro, in Santiago de Compostela.
Short stages option, Easy Camino: If you choose this itinerary option you can divide this stage into two stages with less route , with a first stage of 12 Km until the village of Teo , where you will spend the night, and a second stage of 13 Km until you reach Padron.
It is time to explore the splendid city of Santiago de Compostela, its historic center, one of the best preserved in Europe, and the countless examples of history and culture that have led it to be part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site . We recommend including some extra night to have more time to discover the city with guided tours or to Finisterre .
