The Camino Frances starts from Saint Jean Pied de Port, a small and picturesque French town located in the Pyrenees, one of the most common starting points for pilgrims who make the Camino de Santiago.
It is worth mentioning a challenging first stage that crosses the Pyrenees along the well-known Napoleon route with a considerable ascent, but spectacular in terms of natural beauty, which make every effort worthwhile to reach Roncesvalles and enjoy a unique panorama .
This first section of the Camino ends in the city of Pamplona and you will complete it in 5 days. From Pamplona, the Camino Frances continues towards Logroño.
Arrival to the picturesque last village in French territory, Saint Jean Pied de Port, perfect to stay the first night and be filled with excitement through its beautiful and narrow streets before starting your Camino.
Start of your Camino de Santiago Frances with a stage of ascent through the Pyrenees along the popular Napoleon route, where you will find spectacular views that deserve the effort. There is also the Valcarlos variant, being able to complete the stage with less difficulty but without the same natural appeal. You will leave France to end up arriving in Roncesvalles, where you will spend the night. In Roncesvalles, we recommend that you visit the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria and the Chapel of Santiago.
Short stages option, Easy Camino: If you choose this itinerary option you can divide this stage into two stages with less route , with a first stage of 12 Km until the village of Valcarlos , where you will spend the night, and a second stage of 13 Km until you reach Roncesvalles. It is a good alternative of little difficulty compared to the Napoleon route and suitable for winter or snow periods, although with a not so prominent landscape.
You will follow with less difficulty your Camino from Roncesvalles, walking between beautiful pine and beech forests, and arriving in Zubiri after leaving behind two mountain passes. Zubiri is a small town in Navarra with its historic medieval bridge over the Arga River.
You will start the day following your path parallel to the Arga River with a walk of little difficulty and very pleasant to look at. You will continue crossing old bridges over the river and passing through small towns until you reach the city of Pamplona, popular worldwide for the San Fermin Festival.
Pamplona is a cozy city, with its medieval-era streets and its beautiful cathedral. Do not forget to taste its good gastronomy or taste a good wine from the community of Navarra.
