The Camino Frances from Ponferrada is the penultimate section of the Camino Frances itinerary. The route begins in Castilla y Leon and continues until Galicia entering through the imposing mountain pass of O Cebreiro, one of the most emblematic points of the entire Camino.
Throughout this journey you will pass through beautiful villages such as Villafranca del Bierzo or Samos and you will see every effort satisfied with spectacular panoramas and monuments full of history and symbolism.
The section can be finished in Sarria, the most popular starting point of the Camino de Santiago, or continue with other pilgrims to the Plaza de Obradoiro, in Santiago de Compostela.
Arrival to Ponferrada. Ponferrada is a magnificent city linked to the Camino de Santiago for centuries. We recommend that you visit its old town, the Castle of the Templars and try some of the typical dishes of the region to fill you with energy.
You will begin your stage in Ponferrada, walking between the typical mountains of the Bierzo in a stage of little difficulty until you reach Villafranca del Bierzo, where we recommend that you visit the Church of Santiago and the Convent of San Francisco.
Your Camino continues in one of the m(ost popular stages of the Camino Frances due to the imposing climb along the valley of the Valcarce River until you reach O Cebreiro. The mythical municipality of O Cebreiro will welcome you to Galicia with spectacular views.
Short stages option, Easy Camino: If you choose this itinerary option you can divide this stage into two stages with less route , with a first stage of 18 Km until the village of Herrerías , where you will spend the night, and a second stage of 9 Km until you reach O Cebreiro.
You will continue your Camino de Santiago from O Cebreiro, where many pilgrims also begin their journey through the symbolism of the place and the views. Your path will continue through the beautiful mountains of Rañadoiro and its valleys full of vegetation until you reach Alto do Poio, where you will find the popular pilgrim statue and magnificent views. You will start the descent until you reach Triacastela, where you will stay tonight.
After spending the night in Triacastela, your Camino presents you with a dilemma: follow the original route through San Xil, through beautiful corredoiras and a beautiful valley, or take the Camino through Samos, somewhat longer but with the attractiveness of crossing beautiful Oak and chestnut forests. having the opportunity to visit the popular Samos Monastery. You will finally reach Sarria, the end of this stage.

Sarria is a population with a large movement of pilgrims for being the most popular starting point of the Camino de Santiago. From Sarria you can complete the last 100 Km (62 Mi) of the Camino de Santiago, in this case of the Camino Frances, which is the minimum distance required to obtain the Compostela certificate.
