The third section of the Camino Frances includes the itinerary between Logroño and Burgos. It is a magnificent tour for wine lovers, crossing different vineyard lands and beautiful medieval-style towns such as Santo Domingo de la Calzada. It also offers the opportunity to visit Atapuerca, where you can see its historic caves declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
This route passes from La Rioja to Castilla y Léon, until you reach the ancient and beautiful city of Burgos, famous for its Cathedral of Santa María de Burgos, in Gothic style and declared a World Heritage Site. Burgos has a special charm, it is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the country. It is full of monuments to visit, beautiful squares, and places to explore.
Arrival in Logroño, the capital of La Rioja and the city through which one of the main rivers of the Camino Frances passes, the Ebro. The Cathedral of Santa Maria and the old town are two of its main points of interest. We recommend that you also take advantage of the rich cuisine of La Rioja and its exquisite Tapas.
Little by little you will leave the urban environment near Logroño to continue through the typical lands of Riojan vineyards. It is a stage of very little difficulty, in which you will pass through the old town of Navarrete, where you can visit the baroque church Our Lady of the Assumption. Today's stage ends in Najera, a municipality also in medieval style and with a historical link to the Camino de Santiago.
Today's journey will be much shorter than the previous one. It is a stage of little difficulty in which you will follow your Camino de Santiago Frances through cultivated fields and vineyards. You will find a small climb to the hill where the Azofra village is located, dedicated to the patron saint of La Rioja, the Virgen de la Valvanera. Then you will follow your path to reach Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where you will spend tonight.
Before continuing with your Camino, we recommend that you visit the picturesque old town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, another town with a wide connection to the Camino de Santiago. Then, your walk continues in the direction of the community of Castilla y Leon, crossing agricultural lands and towns such as Grañon or Redecilla del Camino until you reach Belorado, already in the province of Burgos.
Your day will begin in Belorado, where you can visit the Church of Santa Maria and see the different images present in Santiago. The stage will run between forest areas until ascending to the Montes de Oca in the middle of an environment of maximum tranquility. You will enjoy great views until you reach San Juan de Ortega, a small town with a beautiful Monastery and the famous Mausoleum. Your path continues to the spectacular town of Atapuerca, where you will spend tonight.
Short stages option, Easy Camino: If you choose this itinerary option you can divide this stage into two stages with less route , with a first stage of 10 Km until the village of Villafranca Montes de Oca , where you will spend the night, and a second stage of 15 Km to reach Atapuerca.
Today's stage begins in Atapuerca, known for its prehistoric sites and declared a cultural asset and World Heritage site by UNESCO. You will continue your way through the Sierra de Atapuerca, for a flat path for the most part and with little difficulty. Finally, you will reach the beautiful city of Burgos, finishing the stage in the beautiful Cathedral of Burgos.
